When it comes to buying an e-bike, the same rules as for purchasing a car apply: the right vehicle – and drive unit – depend on the customer and application. There are many reasons to purchase bicycles with a rear motor system, with noise pollution leading the way. Rear motor systems are frictionless, and their gears and chain are low-maintenance. “This is because the force is transmitted right to the rear wheel, on the one hand preventing loss via the chain or pinion entirely,” explains Andreas Binz, head of the neodrives business unit at Alber GmbH. “On the other hand, on average the chain and pinion package last four times longer than in mid-drive motors.”
For its neodrives rear motor systems, Alber relies on quality “Made in Germany”. Ninety per cent of the starting materials are made in Germany, and the drive units are assembled at the Albstadt location. Alber also produces the heart of the system – the electric motor – on a state-of-the-art motor winder.
